Dragons were out in force again this year for the village's annual St. George's Day competition, although perhaps there were not as many this year as in previous years. This year the competition had the Queen's 90th birthday as the theme and several dragons entered into the birthday spirit.
Judging was carried out by Sharron Jenkinson from Steventon who is the Chair of Governors at Thameside School in Abingdon. Sharron was looking for originality, effort and also whether people had taken up the challenge of reflecting the royal birthday. Her final decision was:
1st prize: The knitted family of dragons celebrating the Queen’s Birthday at 1, Manor Close. Sharron Jenkinson thought the overall ensemble was most attractive and entertaining and showed talent and artistry. As well as the happy, and clearly well fed, dragons, she liked the knitted bunting, cake and biscuits.
2nd prize:
The dragon astride the birthday gift at Chapel Hayes. Sharron
thought the colours and textures (clever use of bubble wrap) were
superb.
The Children's prize was awarded to the dragon at Little Acorns, the top hat and Union Jack crest being particularly mentioned.
Other dragons getting a special mention were the dragon at Fairview and the usual pond dragon that peeked out this year from the bushes.
The Village Association thanks Sharron Jenkinson for the judging and thanks everyone who made entries to the competition.
